Austrian Werndl Jäger Gewehr 1868; the Werndl rifle replaced the breech-loading version of the Lorenz Wänzl rifle. This firearm is rare, having been produced in limited quantities by Josef Werndl and Karel Holub at the Steyr arms factory (ÖWG – Österreichische Waffenfabriksgesellschaft). Photo #6 shows the markings associated with Austrian Steyr-manufactured weapons (S/ Josef Werndl). A distinctive feature of this firearm is that the bullet is loaded via the muzzle (caliber 28), while the cartridge containing the powder is placed in the chamber; however, it does not strictly require a metallic cartridge—a modern 28-gauge cartridge can also be used. The weapon is in excellent mechanical condition, unrestored, and features a two-position cocking mechanism. Please see the final photo (#12), which shows a small broken piece on the stock.
