Snider-Enfield 1864 Short Rifle (Barnett manufacture), .577 Snider calibre
Snider-Enfield 1864 Short Rifle (Barnett manufacture), .577 Snider calibre
Three official versions of this short rifle existed: models 1856, 1860, and 1861. This example is fitted with a Baddeley-type lower bar and a bayonet lug. The breech mechanism is in good working condition.
The bore is bright and features five grooves with progressive depth and a faster twist rate than later models. The breech block is similar, though not identical, to the system later used on the Snider-Enfield Mark II and Mark III.
The stock is made of dark walnut. This type of weapon was issued to artillery sergeants. No signs of oxidation are present, only a minor crack near the ramrod storage area in the stock. All parts share the same serial number (matching numbers).
Barrel length: 78 cm
Overall length: 123 cm
