LORENZ WÄNZL RIFLE Austro-Hungarian 1867
LORENZ WÄNZL RIFLE Austro-Hungarian 1867
Austrian 1867 rifle featuring an octagonal 13.9mm caliber (14x33R) barrel with a round band and bayonet lug; equipped with an adjustable sight and bearing "W" stamps. Length: 110 cm; barrel length: 62 cm; weight: approx. 4.2 kg.
Solid fruitwood stock showing some signs of use and various stamps—including regimental markings (see photo #12).
As you can see, the stock is cracked, but this is not an issue; the weapon was fully disassembled by a gunsmith who confirmed it is structurally sound and safe to fire. The damage occurred when the rifle fell from a rack, causing cracks in the stock itself and near the stock sling swivel (see the final photos in the listing).
The Wänzl (or Wänzel) rifle was a breech-loading conversion of the Lorenz M1854 and M1862 rifles. It was adopted in 1866—shortly after the Austrian Empire's defeat in the Austro-Prussian War—as an interim measure before a Josef Werndl design was officially approved the following year. A contract was issued for the manufacture of 80,000 units. It is a very rare weapon found today in arms museums and in the collections of true connoisseurs. Mechanically, the weapon is in perfect condition; the firing pin is fully functional (see photo #5). Shipping available within the European Community with tracking and delivery confirmation (NO SHIPPING to Romania or Bulgaria).
